Review
Belgian Doom/Sludge Metallers Throatsnapper come roaring back to life with their brutally dark new album About Life. Combining the harsh movements of Thrash, Post-Metal, Psych, Grind, Post-Rock and Post-Metal, the record controls the bleak atmospherics with a deafening and highly confident presence. The whole sound is quite muscular and aggressive with Throatsnapper playing complex sounding melodies with moments of fast-paced sludgy guitars and abstract noise effects which you’ll feel and hear on the epic opening track of Getting Even.
Getting Even is a faster and meaner version of ISIS and Neurosis based Sludge/Post-Metal with the guttural vocals of Wouter appearing when only they’re needed. The instrumental passages are dense and fuelled by complex Prog Metal structures with an elusive Grind/Doom/Thrash element appearing though the switch to Ambient Post-Rock sounds is a welcome bonus as well.
Second track Brilliant Insane is a more straightforward style of Doom/Sludge Metal with a classic sounding groove becoming Post-Metal obsessed with Wouter’s vocals taking a more commanding presence. Extended instrumental sounds become more Progressive and Psychedelic in nature. The track becomes more vivid and interesting when Throatsnapper to a highly volatile of Stop/Start THRASH based sounds and you begin to appreciate how talented the guys actually are. There’s a wealth of different sounding Doom/Sludge Metal grooves appearing when merging with the other areas of metal that the band inject into the overall mix of the album.
Throatsnapper continue to explore the different aspects and fundamentals of the Atmospheric Sludge Metal sound that becomes the main creative force for their music with some wonderful sonic induced Post-Rock aesthetics leading to some of the most haunting moments of the album. Though, Throatsnapper still diverge into the other areas of their musical arsenal of violent grooves which become ever more threatening when the Groove and Thrash aspect becomes quite dominant on tracks such as: Inebriated, Pleasure, You Must Comply and Tranquil.
About Life is an emotionally charged and complex sounding record which can be quite unsettling in places with Throatsnapper playing an uncompromising style of Doom/Sludge Metal that will leave you on the edge of your seat until the final brutal seconds of the album finally appears.

Review
French Blues/Psych/Stoner Rock outfit DÄTCHA MANDALA return with their third album Koda that has a fresh Garage Rock sound compared to their previous releases. The album is highly energetic with its infectious Stoner Rock sounds and melodic Blues Rock energy which captures a Classic Rock sound with a soulful rebellious attitude.
Taking cues from bands such as QOTSA and CLUTCH but DÄTCHA MANDALA perhaps add a Commercial Rock aspect to their overall sound which is still quite satisfying with the constant Hard Rock attitude spliced throughout the entire album. The vocals are clean and quite “pop” in places but the instrumental grooves the band lay down on the album gives DÄTCHA MANDALA a more aggressive personality.
The lyrics are tinged with real emotion which perhaps could be inspired by bands such as The Who, Foo Fighters and even Led Zepp especially on the earlier tracks such as She Said, Koda and The Wanderer.
The other good aspect of the album is that DÄTCHA MANDALA lean quite heavily into more areas of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock with echoes of Motorhead and Black Sabbath making a more dominant appearance to give the band more credibility with the heavier underground scene. This allows Koda to be quite a hard album to place under and it’s even the better for it.
DÄTCHA MANDALA throw in twisted Psychedelic noises and frenzied guitars on other tracks such as Om Namah Shivaya, Wild Fire, Love Myself and the standout rebellious track It's Not Only Rock'n'Roll (and we don't like it). There’s a deep sense of DÄTCHA MANDALA love and respect for the British and American Hard Rock scene within the record which sees the band switch to multiple different styles of music for the majority of the songs.
The music is always LOUD and BOISTEROUS with moments of wild originality on the heavier and aggressive parts of the album. DÄTCHA MANDALA have released their standout album to date and one that will gain them a whole legion of new followers. With first rate production values, Koda is knockout entertainment from start to finish.
Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Last heard slinging low slung fuzzed-out doom on their 2019 album, From The Ghost Grey Depths, this July will see the official worldwide release of Mourning Light, the brand-new studio album from London-based trio, Old Horn Tooth.
For any fans of the genre that have stalked the capital in recent years, chances are London Doom Collective has supplied you with ample opportunity to sample some of the finest underground bands in a live setting. Since 2020 – Ollie, Chris Jones, Mark Davidson, and Sean Durbin – have flexed their DIY muscle as friends, promoters, and three-quarter members of Old Horn Tooth to devastating effect. Now, with the band’s new album on the horizon, they finally turn their hand toward a new endeavour, releasing music on vinyl.
“Putting out a record ourselves through London Doom Collective is our own personal statement of independence,” explains bassist, Ollie Isaac. “It’s a testament to the power of the underground and a direct connection with the scene, people and international doom community that has supported, guided and helped us grow.”
Often drawing comparisons to the likes of Conan and Monolord, Old Horn Tooth are a stirring colossus that offer up hypnotic, megaton grooves of slow heavy riffage in thrall to the cosmos. As Outlaws of the Sun describe, “You can’t but help being swept by the sheer heaviness and excitement of it all.”
New single and the title track for Mourning Light is a perfect case in point. Serving as an epic fifteen-minute jaunt into the sinister undertones of doom it’s the centrepiece to a startling collection of new songs. All of which navigate the complexities of grief and the resilience of the human spirit.
“This particular song explores the bittersweet memories and hidden sadness accompanying loss, while also offering glimpses of potential hope in the ‘mourning light’. Through its journey from bleak despair to the final acceptance, it encapsulates a shared sorrow and solace in vulnerability.”
Due for release on 5th July 2024, Mourning Light can be pre-ordered via London Doom Collective here. The album will also be accompanied by the release of a limited-edition tape from Norway’s Evil Noise Recordings (here) and an exclusive beer in collaboration with Black Iris Brewery (here).
